Today Tennille and I decided to make prayer flags. The Buddhist kind. We got all the materials [fabric, thread, the sewing machine, etc] and set out to work. It was quite the adventure at first--trying to get the sewing machine to work, serging the edges, and then making the loop for the string to go through, but we figured it all out, and ten hours later, we had a finished product. One of the things I love about Tennille is the fact that she gets into projects like I do. We are Sunday activity buddies. We cook, or make some sort of art thing, or go on an adventure, or something like that. Another great thing about her is the fact that we can totally snipe at each other all through one of these activities, but once you turn on a little Celtic Thunder and you've got us singing our hearts out to each other. It's a beautiful thing.
A lot of you are probably wondering what the deal is with prayer flags. In Buddhism they're rectangles of coloured cloth [blue, red, white, green, and yellow are the typical colours, but we added purple and orange] which symbolize prayers. When the wind catches your flag, it is believed that the wind is taking your prayers and mantras and spreading good will and compassion to all. There is a lot more, like what each colour symbolizes, so be sure to read more about it here, but I have to say, I love the idea that one person hanging out their flags is spreading good things to everyone.
