Getting All Fancy 'n Stuff

Saturday, May 28, 2011

Helloooo! So today was my grade 12 prom. Oh. My. God. Hugest ordeal of my life. I got up at 8:30, and literally did not stop getting ready, taking photos, waiting in lines, promenading, eating, dancing, etc. until 10:30. PM. YES, THAT IS 14 HOURS OF PROM. It was so much fun though! It was one of those days where even if you aren't friends with someone, you act like you're friends. I took a thousand million photos [restatement: I had a thousand million photos taken OF me], all of which contain me either thumbs upping, or looking like a foolio. Mission: complete. I managed to get pictures with all the people that are/have been very important to me in high school. And my three best friends were there, which made it really special. They're a year younger, so there are a lot of things we don't end up getting to do together. Actually, we mostly always find a way for them to participate.

I had a realization this morning too, about prom and such things. I had just finished putting on false eyelashes, when I realized my hussy makeup just wasn't me. It looked good, and feminine and all that... but it just wasn't me, and I couldn't get comfortable. So I took off all my makeup and put on some eyeliner and mascara, badaboombadabingbadabang. Perfect. So what is my realization? Well it is this:

No matter how much time or effort you put into to looking nice for a special occasion, the most important thing is to look like yourself.

Otherwise you are going to look back at photos and think, "Dang giiiirl, what was I doing?!"

I also had another realization, which is pretty obvious, but I feel like a lot of people sort of ignore it. So, backstory. I have this friend, and he is the most wonderful, fabulous friend in the world. And we have been friends for 13 years now. And that is a long time to be friends. So I asked him to be my prom date, and he was, and I am so glad that I went with him, and not some random guy from school. Even if the random hot guy from school was that hot kid in my art class. Y'all know who I'm talking about. Anyway, I'm so glad I went with my wonderful, lovely, special friend. It wasn't awkward at all at dinner, because my momma and him are like, besties, and my dad and him get along super well, and well, he's like family. He didn't even cringe when my father dumped an entire glass of water on the floor, or when I lit a serviette on fire... which I have to say would make some people run and hide.

Life lesson from this?

Go to prom with someone that will still make you smile 30 years down the road when you look at those pictures you took.

I think those are all the life lessons I have for today... I hope all of you who are graduating this year have/had a wonderful time at the respective grad events, and remember to be safe and responsible! No one wants to be that grad year.

So now I have two weeks of school, then my graduation, convocation, commencement, walk-down, walk-up, walk backwards if you're not a duck, GTFO ceremony; which I am really looking forward to. And I'm not even being sarcastic! I really like those blue gowns you get to wear [at least my school wears blue]...

Anyway, here! Have some photos from the magical event!
