Plus Que Run!

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Wow wow! So started week 2 of my 5k training program today! Running for minute and a half, with two minute walking intervals.  Not bad, my friends, not bad! It honestly didn't feel like that much of a difference from week 1, where I was running one minute, walking a minute and a half. I do this thing where I get bogged down about 10 minutes into the session - just before the halfway mark - but once I hit halfway, I pick right back up again! I'm still super proud of myself for actually being able to do it. This morning was a bit more difficult to get out of bed, but that's just because I moved into my new loft/fort bed yesterday, and it was so toasty warm. But I dragged myself out, and was really glad that I did! I love running days, because I feel like I've accomplished something big by 6:30am.

I'm thinking that I should probably do some cross-training/strength-training to balance out the running... I want to make sure I'm working all the muscle groupings, and not just my running muscles! I'm not sure quite how to start that, but if any of y'all have any insights into any good programs for this, my muscles will be forever appreciative! Another great thing about running has been that my dad is now joining me. He doesn't seem overly enthused about the 6am start time, but it's definitely nice to have the company. It also pushes me, because he's definitely fitter than me at this point, so I feel like I definitely can't walk when I'm supposed to be running. I will say that I haven't walked when I wasn't supposed to since the first day. That hilly route just killed me! I might find a new route soonish - probably next week - just for a change of scenery or something. I'm not sure. It seems silly to drive somewhere to run... but I honestly just can't deal with my road because it's so so steep, and once you've finished your run, you don't want to be hiking up a miserable hill. I think that's what did me in last time.

Sunburns, sparkles, and success

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Today was a day to top all days! Woke up to a sun alert. Yes. A sun alert. I will take a sun alert any day. So I spent the morning reading Gossip Girl, slathered in sunscreen [about 400 layers so my burn from yesterday wouldn't become more burned - did it help? Nope.] soaking up all the Vitamin D possible. Can I just take this opportunity to say how much I hate winter? It's just not okay with me. Those few days around Christmastime with the soft snow, and jolly festive air, those days are okay. The rest of the wet, slushy, freezing ice pellets pelting your face... those days aren't okay. I will trade snow for stomach sunburns any day.

Two very exciting things happened today:

1. I sparkled my phone case. It is now fabulously sparkly. All you need to do this magical sparklization is the modge-podge, and the glitterz, and a phone case. And a sponge brush, but I guess you could use your fingers, or a popsicle stick... or like... cat hair taped to a chopstick. But I used a sponge brush. It seemed like a good idea. Anyway, I just modge-podged the case, sprinkled the sparkles, waited for it to dry, brushed off the loose sparkles, then just put another fairly thick layer of modge-podge over it to seal in all that sparkly goodness. Et voila! Unicorns be jellin' of my phone.

Unicorn Phone
2. I got a sweet job that is actually related to what I want to do when I grow up! I will be working as a summer staff person at our local museum! I'm actually so excited about this job... I get to do actual fun work, collaborate with some pretty rad people, archive, do community outreach and fundraising. It's going to be an excellent time! It makes me very excited. Probably the most excited I have ever been about a job. I'm pretty much a nerd... but we knew that already.

I think my copious amount of sun today has successfully melted my brain out of my head, so please excuse any spelling, grammar, or syntax errors in this post. e.e. cummings didn't really believe in "proper"syntax... so neither do I - 'cause he was a legit kind of guy. I'm starting to rhyme as well as alliterate now... so I think that's my cue to leave. I hope everyone else had a stellar day too!

Welcome, welcome!

Hello, hello! Welcome to the new and improved Cat Wings Can. If you were paying attention to the old site you will have noticed many layout changes in the last few days. Those layout changes were me trying to find exactly the right look for the blog, but just not succeeding! Having conceded defeat by WordPress - it's now a reality that you have to pay in order to customize your CSS or even your Typekit font - I decided to retry using Blogger, and hey! It isn't horrible anymore! I had issues before with the general appearance and ease of access on the editing and management of one's blog, but what with Google's new "modern" look, things are pretty to look at, easy to use, and best of all: everything syncs up beautifully with my Google account! Yes, I will forever advocate for the beauty and seamlessness of a Google account. Anyway, I just figured I should explain the change, and I hope you all enjoy the new layout, and send me any input or suggestions you may have regarding it. As for the picture today - I just thought it was a nice way to enter into Friday - which really is the weekend, after all!
